Homemade vs. Store Bought Juices

June 5, 2013

When you go to a grocery store, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if you get crazy over numerous juice variations and brands. If you still do not have a specific brand or flavor in mind, get ready to spend a couple of minutes or even hours in that aisle. But come to think of it, is there something better than store bought juices? What if you just made one at home?

There is no doubt that homemade juices are better than store bought ones. You simply could just not know what is in a store bought juice; not to mention HOW it was made. A lot of things can happen in factories and nutrients could get lost in the process. Most prepackaged juices undergo pasteurization. This process involves heating it up to a certain temperature. While this removes all unwanted microorganisms in the drink, it also removes the good ones.

Despite the nutritional facts segment and the various marketing strategies that say their drinks are “made with real pulp, freshly- prepared, all- natural, etc.,” there will always be that mysterious part to your drink. Of course there is also that possibility that saving measures were taken in producing your drink. This could mean fewer fresh ingredients and more artificial flavors, coloring and enhancers. Not to mention the sugars and preservatives to extend the shelf life of their products! Speaking of sugars, fruits are just naturally sweet to begin with. And for sure, unwanted sugars and calories can be found in commercial juices. These things could make your drink a bit better in terms of taste, but you’ll be surprised with the numerous bad and harmful effects it could do to your body.

But hey, we are not trying to badmouth those in the stores. We are just trying to state the possibilities here…or the facts! Just like the fact that time- wise and accessibility- wise, store bought juices are better. They are just grab- and- go products you can simply get from your local grocery. They do not require any preparations. You can also stock up on them at home so you’ll always have a bottle anytime, anywhere, in an instant. But with that, you should also think of the instant unwanted chemicals you are allowing your body to take in. So it would be best to reconsider the pros and cons of a store bought drink.

On the other hand, with homemade juices, not only are you conscious of what’s actually in them, you also have the freedom to mix and match ingredients according to your preference. Now, wouldn’t that be just wonderful? If you are the type of person who is not really a fan of eating fresh fruits and vegetables, then juicing can do the trick. You can prepare your juice at the start of the day and take sips all throughout the day. Fruits and vegetables in liquid form can also be easier for our bodies. It allows our bodies to absorb all the nutrients, enzymes, vitamins and minerals faster. More so, you’ll feel confident that you’re getting the real deal. You get to take in the pulps and the skin, which contain most of a fruit’s or vegetable’s fiber. If you didn’t know, fiber helps our digestion and prevents us from experiencing constipation. It keeps our bowel movement regular. This allows our digestive system to waste less energy in processing. By drinking fresh and homemade juices, you are also detoxifying your body.

Something nearest and closest to its natural form is the best. As soon as you squeeze the juice from a fruit or vegetable, it slowly loses its vitamins and nutrients. The longer the gap between squeezing and drinking, the more nutritional content gets away. So, a one day old juice is still way better than a month old drink in the stores.

Freshly squeezed and prepared juices help prevent and cure many illnesses. From the not so serious cough and colds, to cancers and heart diseases, juices can make your body tougher or aid you in the healing process. The vitamins and nutrients help fight harmful free radicals, bacteria and viruses.

Drinking juices can also prevent you from getting sick. Aside from being refreshed and quenched, they also help you stay hydrated and energized. It does wonders to your skin, too!

The next time you go to a grocery store, remember this article. That should do the trick in helping you decide if you should spend more time in the fresh produce section or the bottled and prepackaged drinks. If you want to get healthy and fit, you better start juicing; of course the fresh way! Do not think twice about investing in a juicer. Go ahead and get one. It is surely a step in the right direction towards a healthier you.
